We live in a generation that celebrates the finish line, yet so easily overlooks the process it takes to get there. We cheer for the runner breaking the tape while forgetting the child who once trembled through those first uncertain steps. No one is born running. Every stride is learned slowly, faithfully, one step at a time.
The Kingdom of God follows the same pattern. Before He entrusts us with greater things, He first teaches us to be faithful in the small ones. Before fruit ever appears, roots must reach downward quietly, deeply, and unseen.
Have you ever found yourself frustrated because your progress seemed slower than you expected? Have you wondered why God appears to be preparing you when you’re eager to move forward?
The Beauty of Small Beginnings
Too often, discouragement creeps in when our beginnings look too ordinary. We measure our first step against someone else’s twentieth year and wonder why our progress feels slow. Yet every enduring structure rises one layer at a time, stone upon stone, there is a hidden work before visible glory.
God is never rushed because He is building with eternity in view. He is far more concerned with who you are becoming than how quickly you arrive. While we focus on destinations, God focuses on transformation.
As the Israelites rebuilt the temple after years of exile and discouragement, the Lord spoke through the prophet Zechariah with words that still encourage us today:
“Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin…” (Zechariah 4:10).
What a remarkable picture. Heaven celebrates what earth often overlooks. God delights in the trembling first brick, the whispered prayer still learning its own voice, the hesitant act of obedience, the seed barely pressed into the soil. What seems insignificant in human eyes may be the very beginning of something unshakable in the hands of God.
God Always Starts with the Foundation
Every builder understands this: no one begins with the roof.
Before walls rise, a foundation must be dug deep into the ground. Before beauty is seen, there is hidden labor beneath the surface—dust, strain, and unseen work that strengthens the finished building. Foundations are rarely admired, yet they determine whether a structure will stand when storms come.
In the same way, God often spends more time establishing the foundation –the unseen– than what will eventually become visible. If the foundation is weak, even the most beautiful and powerful calling cannot bear its weight.
We often pray for elevation, but God begins with excavation. We ask Him to build quickly, yet He lovingly digs deeper. The deeper the foundation, the greater the weight the structure can carry.
The Purpose of the Process
Perhaps you find yourself in that in between place – the stretch of time between promise and fulfillment, between vision and manifestation.
What if the season you’ve been trying to escape is actually the season preparing you for everything you’ve been praying for?
Do not mistake the process for delay. The process is the promise unfolding.
Every lesson, every closed door, every quiet endurance, every unseen act of faith is shaping you for what is ahead. God is not merely bringing you somewhere; He is preparing you for what you will carry when you arrive.
There have been seasons in my own life when I wanted God to move faster. I could see the destination, but I couldn’t understand why the journey seemed so long. Looking back, I now realize that what I once called delay was actually preparation. God was strengthening my character before expanding my assignment. He was refining my language, focus and if I’m being honest, my obedience level before He stretching the tent pegs.
My friend, there is no shortcut to spiritual maturity. There is no elevator to purpose. The journey from beginning to fulfillment is walked step by step through daily obedience, quiet faithfulness, and steady trust when nothing feels certain. Every act of obedience becomes another stone laid in the path God is preparing beneath your feet.
One day you will look back and realize that nothing was wasted. Every hidden moment was holding something greater together.
Honor What God Is Building
So do not despise your small beginnings. Do not resent the season where you are still learning, still forming, still laying one stone at a time.
Instead, honor the foundation.
If God requires you to dig deep, embrace the preparation. Keep walking even when your heart longs to run ahead. The God who laid the first stone is faithful to complete what He has started. One day, you will stand in the place you once only saw in prayer, and you will understand why every small step mattered. Everything you walk through on the way to your God-given destination is significant. Nothing in the process is wasted.
This week, I encourage you to pause and reflect on where God has you today. Instead of measuring how far you still have to go, thank Him for the foundation He is building beneath your feet. Ask Him to help you recognize the significance of today’s obedience, trusting that it is preparing you for tomorrow’s purpose.
“For who has despised the day of small things?” (Zechariah 4:10).
Trust the Builder. Rest in the process.
The foundation you are laying today is quietly preparing you to carry the weight of tomorrow’s purpose.
Prayer
Father, thank You for every season of preparation. Teach me not to despise small beginnings but to trust the work You are doing beneath the surface. Give me patience when I want to rush ahead, wisdom to embrace the process, and faith to believe that every step of obedience is preparing me for Your purpose. Help me honor the foundation You are laying in my life, knowing that what You build will stand. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
