There is something deeply comforting about knowing that God never abandons what He begins. Yet, if we’re honest, there are moments when it feels as though He has. We look at our lives and see what is still unfinished be it unanswered prayers we’ve prayed for years, the promises we’re still waiting to see fulfilled, the areas where we’re still cultivating, and the dreams that seem to have been placed on hold. We can become so aware of what hasn’t happened that we overlook the quiet work God is doing beneath the surface.
But God’s ways should never been measured by our timelines.
I love what Paul wrote with unwavering confidence, “And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns” (Philippians 1:6).
What captures my heart is the certainty in those words. Paul doesn’t say, I hope God finishes what He started. He says, I am certain. His confidence wasn’t rooted in his ability or other people’s ability to remain faithful. It was rooted in God’s character. The One who begins the work is the very One who promises to complete it.
I believe many of us become discouraged because we judge our lives by what we can see. We measure our progress by visible fruit, while God is often working where human eyes cannot reach. Just as roots grow long before branches bear fruit, the deepest work of the Holy Spirit often happens in places no one else can see. Heaven is never idle, even when our circumstances seem unchanged.
Perhaps you’ve wondered why the promise has taken so long. Maybe you’ve questioned whether you heard God correctly because the path has looked nothing like you imagined. I’ve learned that Gods delays are never an indication of His absence. More often than not, they are evidence of His careful preparation. While we’re asking Him to fulfill the promise, He is shaping the person who will carry it. While we’re praying for open doors, He is strengthening our character behind closed ones. While we’re waiting for the next chapter, He is writing something beautiful in the one we’re living now.
The enemy would love for us to believe that unfinished means forgotten or that God is not able to do as He promised. But the Holy Spirit gently reminds us that unfinished simply means God is not done yet. He is still working behind the scenes and perfecting what only what His hands can fashion.
There maybe seasons when His work feels hidden. Seasons when prayers seem to rise without immediate answers. Seasons when obedience feels unnoticed and faithfulness feels ordinary. Yet I don’t believe Heaven sees those moments the way we do. Every quiet prayer, every act of obedience, every tear surrendered in His presence, every time you chose to trust Him instead of giving in to fear, none of it has been overlooked. God is weaving every moment into His eternal purpose.
My friend, God is very intentional
So, do not to despise the process. While you celebrate fulfilled promises, don’t forget God treasures surrendered hearts. He is just as present in the becoming as He is in the arrival. Some of the greatest transformations happen long before anyone else can recognize them. While you think nothing is happening, the Master Builder is laying a foundation that will be able to sustain everything He has prepared for you.
Maybe today you feel as though you’ve been waiting longer than you expected. Maybe you’re carrying questions that haven’t been answered or believing for something that still seems out of reach. If that’s where you are, don’t mistake God’s silence for His absence. The Father has never stopped working. His hands have never left your life. He has not forgotten the word He spoke over you, nor has He abandoned the purpose He placed within you.
God is not intimidated by your unfinished places. He knew every weakness, every detour, every disappointment, and every victory before He ever called your name. Nothing about your journey has caught Him by surprise. The work He began was never dependent on your perfection; it has always depended on His faithfulness.
One day, you’ll look back and realize that what felt like delay was actually divine wisdom. What felt like silence was holy preparation. What felt like ordinary faithfulness was God building something eternal within you. You’ll see that every season had purpose, every step was ordered, and every chapter was leading you closer to the person He created you to become.
So, don’t lose heart. Keep walking with Him. Keep praying when the answers seem slow. Keep trusting when you cannot yet see the outcome. Keep saying yes to the quiet work of the Holy Spirit. The story isn’t over, and neither is God’s work in you.
The Author of your faith has never put down His pen. The Potter has not stepped away from the wheel. The Shepherd has not lost sight of His sheep. The Father is still at work, patiently, faithfully, and intentionally shaping you into the likeness of His Son. And because He is faithful, you can rest in this unchanging promise: the God who began the good work within you will finish what He started.
